Cathedral Neighbourhood

The Cathedral neighbourhood along 13th Avenue is where Regina eats, drinks, and goes to the independent coffee shop. The strip stretching from Elphinstone to Lorne Street has a concentration of restaurants, cafés, and bars that represents the city's most walkable commercial district — everything from Ethiopian and Thai restaurants to the city's best natural food stores and the independent bookshop that has been here for decades.

The neighbourhood hosts the Cathedral Arts Festival in September, a weekend event that fills the streets with music, food vendors, and local art. The residential streets behind 13th Avenue have the most architecturally interesting housing stock in the city — pre-1920 houses in various vernacular styles, well-maintained because the neighbourhood attracts the kind of residents who care about that sort of thing. It is a fifteen-minute walk from the downtown core and the right direction to head for dinner.

A story
The Cathedral neighbourhood is named for Holy Rosary Cathedral, the Catholic cathedral on 13th Avenue, which was begun in 1913 and modified several times through the mid-20th century. The neighbourhood around it developed as Regina's first residential area beyond the downtown core, and its mix of pre-WWI houses, interwar bungalows, and commercial strips along 13th Avenue gives it a human scale that the city's newer subdivisions lack.
