Scarth Street Mall

Scarth Street Mall is Regina's central pedestrian street, a short block in the downtown core that functions as the city's outdoor social space. O'Hanlon's Irish pub anchors one end; various restaurants and cafés fill the street level, with a mixture of office buildings and older commercial structures above. The street is not architecturally significant, but the pedestrianization makes it the most pleasant stretch of the downtown for walking and sitting outside.

In summer, Scarth Street is where the downtown office workers eat lunch outside and where the evening restaurant crowd congregates before spreading out into the adjacent streets. The winter enclosures that some restaurants construct around their outdoor seating extend the useful season considerably — Scarth Street in January with a properly constructed heated patio is a genuinely Canadian experience. The street is two blocks from Victoria Park and five minutes' walk from the casino in the old Union Station.

A story
Scarth Street was pedestrianized in 1974, making it one of the earlier pedestrian malls in western Canada. The street sits one block east of the main downtown shopping corridor and runs between 11th and 12th Avenues — a short stretch, but concentrated with the kind of businesses that make a downtown useful: pubs, restaurants, coffee shops, and the occasional independent retailer that has held on through decades of suburban shopping competition.
