Holy Rosary Cathedral

Holy Rosary Cathedral at 13th Avenue and Garnet Street is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Regina and the city's most prominent ecclesiastical building. The cathedral is larger than its modest neighbourhood setting suggests, and the copper dome that caps the crossing is visible for several blocks in each direction. The interior holds some fine mid-century decorative work — stained glass, marble flooring, and woodwork installed during various renovations — that gives the space more richness than the somewhat utilitarian exterior implies.

The cathedral is in the heart of the Cathedral neighbourhood, which takes its name from the building. It is an active parish and holds regular services; outside service hours the interior is generally open to visitors. The neighbourhood around it — the restaurants and cafés along 13th Avenue, the residential streets of pre-war housing — is worth exploring regardless of interest in the cathedral itself.

A story
Holy Rosary Cathedral was built in stages from 1912 onward and has been modified and expanded several times — the copper dome visible from much of the surrounding neighbourhood is a 1960 addition. The cathedral has been through enough redesigns to make its current form something of an architectural palimpsest, with Gothic, baroque, and mid-century modernist elements layered on top of each other in ways that architectural purists find uncomfortable and others find characterful.
