Arenal

Volcanic Costa Rican region around Arenal’s cone, with rainforest trails, lava fields, and natural hot springs.

Arenal Volcano is the most famous natural attraction in Costa Rica. The cone-shaped volcano erupted spectacularly in 1968 after 400 years of dormancy, and until 2010 it was constantly active — producing ash columns, explosions, and glowing red lava almost daily. It has been quiet since then, but the landscape of lava fields and rainforest around its base remains dramatic.

The main draw beyond the volcano itself is the Tabacón hot springs, a series of natural thermal pools nestled in the rainforest. The resort built around them offers hot baths, massages, and good food — it is genuinely worth the visit. Many people stay at the Tabacón resort, but there are plenty of other lodges nearby at lower prices.

The area around Arenal also offers hanging bridges through the canopy, zip lines, and walks through primary rainforest. Lake Arenal, a large reservoir at the base of the volcano, is good for kayaking and windsurfing.
