El Aguila Wreck

Deliberately sunk 1990s freighter off Sandy Bay — Roatán's main wreck dive

The El Aguila ("the Eagle") is a 70-metre cargo freighter sunk on purpose in 1997 off Sandy Bay as a dive attraction. It sits upright on the sand at 35 metres, split into three sections by Hurricane Mitch in 1998, and has become one of the most reliably populated reefs on the island — grouper, moray eels, large schools of horse-eye jacks, and a resident green sea turtle.

A standard advanced-Open-Water site (depth limits) but not technical. Most dive shops include El Aguila on their two-tank afternoon trips.
