La Tigra National Park

Cloud forest reserve with excellent birdwatching, 22 km from the city

Parque Nacional La Tigra is a cloud forest reserve about 22 km northeast of Tegucigalpa, accessible as a day trip. Honduras's first national park, it covers 238 square kilometres of montane forest at elevations between 1,800 and 2,270 metres — noticeably cooler and damper than the capital.

The park has a good trail network suitable for day hikes. Birdwatching is the main draw: resplendent quetzals are occasionally seen, along with emerald toucanets, highland trogons, and dozens of other cloud forest species. Howler monkeys, pumas, and white-tailed deer are present but less reliably spotted. Two visitor centres — Jutiapa (more developed) and El Rosario (quieter, near an old silver mine) — serve the park. A private shuttle or taxi is the most practical way to get there; public transport exists but involves a long walk from the highway.

A story
La Tigra was Honduras's first national park, declared in 1980, and it protects one of the last surviving sections of cloud forest in the densely populated mountains around Tegucigalpa. The park also functions as the city's main watershed — Tegucigalpa depends on La Tigra for much of its water supply, giving conservation here a direct practical dimension. At 2,270 metres elevation the temperature drops sharply relative to the capital.
