Tegucigalpa Cathedral

18th-century colonial cathedral on Parque Central

The Cathedral of Saint Michael the Archangel is the main Catholic church of Tegucigalpa, facing directly onto Parque Central. Built between 1765 and 1782, it has a Baroque façade that shows the Spanish colonial architectural tradition at a relatively late stage of its evolution in Honduras.

The interior is more impressive than the sometimes-worn exterior suggests. The main altarpiece is gilded and ornate, and the side chapels hold colonial-era religious art and sculpture. The cathedral is the seat of the Archdiocese of Tegucigalpa. Free entry; modest dress expected.

A story
The Cathedral of Tegucigalpa, dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel, was begun in 1765 and completed in 1782 — the project took nearly two decades, which is short for a colonial cathedral of this scale. The façade mixes Baroque and Neoclassical elements in a way that reflects the transitional tastes of late-18th-century Central America. Inside, the gilded altarpiece is considered among the finest examples of colonial religious art in Honduras.
