Port Antonio

Northeastern Jamaican harbour town backed by lush hills, Victorian architecture, and rain-fed beaches

Port Antonio is one of the most charming towns in Jamaica and the least like the resort towns of the north coast. It sits on the northeastern tip of the island, backed by steep forested hills that catch more rain than anywhere else in Jamaica — which keeps everything dramatically lush. The town has a pair of natural harbours, some fine Victorian and Edwardian architecture, and an unhurried atmosphere that attracts visitors who want to escape the all-inclusive circuit.

In the mid-20th century Port Antonio was fashionable with Hollywood royalty. Errol Flynn had a ranch nearby and his wife's family still operates the Trident Hotel. The area's appeal hasn't changed much: beautiful scenery, relatively few tourists, excellent food, and access to some of the island's best natural attractions.

Rio Grande rafting is Port Antonio's signature activity — a two-hour bamboo raft trip down the river through lush forest. It's genuinely relaxing and a world away from the activity-crammed resort experience.

Frenchman's Cove is a short drive east of town: a beautiful sheltered cove where a cold freshwater stream meets the Caribbean. It's on the grounds of a private estate and charges admission.

Blue Lagoon, also east of town, is a 55-metre deep lagoon connected to the sea, with an extraordinary mix of cold fresh water and warm salt water visible in layers. There are boats for hire and a restaurant.

Port Antonio is a good base for exploring the northeastern parishes and the Blue Mountains to the south.

Things to Do

Port Antonio's pleasures are mostly natural. Rio Grande rafting, the Blue Lagoon, Frenchman's Cove, and the lush hills of the Blue Mountains to the south make it one of the most scenically varied corners of Jamaica. The pace is slower than Montego Bay or Negril, the crowds are thinner, and the landscape more dramatic. The Folly Peninsula east of town has ruins, a lighthouse, and good swimming.
