Hotel Mocambo

A five-storey art-deco hotel set on a low rise above Playa Mocambo, opened in 1932 as one of the first purpose-built beach resort hotels in Mexico. The original building survives largely intact: curved white facade, terraces that step down toward the sea, an enormous open-air pool, and a lobby of black and white tile that has seen most of the country's twentieth-century political class come and go.

It still operates as a hotel and is open to non-guests for meals or to swim at the pool for a modest day fee. Even if you don't stay or eat, walk the gardens and stick your head into the lobby — it is one of the better preserved pieces of 1930s coastal architecture in Mexico.
