Mouth of the Jamapa River

Boca del Río — "river mouth" — gets its name from this spot, where the Jamapa River meets the Gulf of Mexico. It is not a dramatic estuary on a global scale; the river is modest and the meeting with the sea happens behind a low sandbar. But the bank on the south side is a long-standing fishing community, with painted wooden launches drawn up on the mud and palm-thatched cantinas serving whatever came in that morning.

A short pedestrian bridge crosses to a sandy island in the middle of the channel, used for fishing and as a viewpoint. Pelicans and frigatebirds work the channel. Best at sunrise, when the boats are heading out.
