MUSA Underwater Museum

Underwater sculpture park with 500+ submerged figures off Punta Nizuc

The Museo Subacuático de Arte sits underwater off the coast of Cancun, with two main galleries: Salon Manchones (deeper, for scuba divers) at 8-10 metres, and Salon Nizuc (shallow, for snorkellers) at 3-4 metres. The dominant installation is "Silent Evolution" — 450 life-cast figures, each modelled on a real Mexican villager, standing in a vast cluster on the sandy bottom and slowly being colonised by coral and sponges.

Access is by boat tour from Cancun or Isla Mujeres; multiple operators run snorkel and dive trips, with prices around US$60-100 depending on operator and equipment. Glass-bottom-boat tours are also available for those who don't want to get wet. The figures are most striking after a few years of underwater colonisation — the older sections are now genuinely encrusted with marine life.

A story
British sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor created the more than 500 life-cast human figures from pH-neutral marine concrete designed to encourage coral growth. The installation began in 2009 as a deliberate strategy to divert snorkellers and divers away from the over-trafficked natural reefs off Cancun and to seed new ones.
