Fresnillo

Zacatecas silver city with a working mining identity and the Plateros pilgrimage sanctuary nearby.

Fresnillo is a silver city north of Zacatecas, less pretty than the state capital but more direct about what made the region rich. Mining is not background history here. It is the city's working identity, visible in the Proaño mine area and in the old institutions built around it.

The strongest reason to come is the pairing of mine and pilgrimage. Mina Proaño opens a small visitor window onto one of the world's major silver-mining districts, while Ágora José González Echeverría keeps Fresnillo's cultural and mining memory in a handsome former school. A few kilometres away, Santuario de Plateros draws pilgrims to the Santo Niño de Atocha.

Fresnillo is not a soft-focus colonial escape. It is a practical city with heavy industry, traffic, devotion, and flashes of old Zacatecan stone. That rougher mix is exactly why it earns a day if you are already travelling through central Zacatecas.
