El Oro de Hidalgo is a small mountain town in the northwest of Mexico State, close to the Michoacan border. Its name is literal: gold made the town rich, and the remaining theatres, mine works, railway buildings, and steep streets still feel more dramatic than its size suggests.
The centre has the polish of a Pueblo Magico without losing the oddness of a former mining boomtown. The Teatro Juarez brings Art Nouveau flourish to the plaza, the Mining Museum and Tiro Norte explain the industry, and Presa Brockman gives the town an easy outdoors stop in the pines.
El Oro is a good day trip or overnight detour from Toluca, Morelia, or the monarch butterfly country around eastern Michoacan. It is not grand, but it has a clear identity and enough real anchors to reward a slow afternoon.
