Kabah

Puuc-route Maya site south of Merida, known for the mask-covered Palace of the Masks.

Kabah is one of the essential Puuc-route ruins south of Merida, and it pairs naturally with Uxmal if you have a full day and an appetite for Maya architecture. Its showpiece is the Palace of the Masks, where rows of long-nosed Chaac masks make the facade feel almost woven from stone.

The site is smaller and quieter than Uxmal, which is exactly why it works. You can look closely at Puuc carving, walk between restored structures and partly overgrown remains, and get a better sense of how these cities related to each other across the dry Yucatan hills.
