Parque Santa Lucía

Shaded park with Thursday evening serenades and Sunday artisan market

Parque Santa Lucía, a few blocks north of the Plaza Mayor on Calle 60, is one of the most pleasant public spaces in the city. The park occupies a shaded square that has been a neighbourhood gathering point since the colonial era — it was originally an area where travellers arriving from the interior would rest their horses. The surrounding arcades have cafes and restaurants that spill onto the pavement, making it a good place to sit in the evenings when the heat has eased.

Thursday evenings bring the Serenata Yucateca, a free outdoor music event that has been running for decades: trova yucateca, marimba, and folk music performed on a small stage with chairs set out in the park. It is genuinely local — the audience is mostly Meridanos, not tourists — and provides the best introduction to trova culture short of tracking down a club. The Sunday artisan market sells local crafts, honey, and embroidered clothing. The 18th-century church on the north side of the park, the Iglesia Santa Lucía, is smaller and less imposing than the Cathedral but more intimate.
