Casa Natal de Morelos

The birthplace of Jose Maria Morelos — independence hero, priest, and military genius — is preserved as a small museum and cultural space a short walk from the cathedral. The house itself is a modest colonial structure that has been restored and furnished to reflect the late colonial period. The rooms feel appropriately spare given that Morelos grew up in a family of modest means, working as a mule driver before entering the priesthood.

The museum covers Morelos's life chronologically, from his modest origins through his years as a parish priest in Carácuaro to his role leading the insurgency after Father Hidalgo's death. The exhibits include personal objects, documents, and portraits, though the presentation is somewhat stiff. The real value is in the building itself and its connection to one of the most consequential figures in Mexican history.

A story
Jose Maria Morelos was born in this house on 30 September 1765. He went on to become one of the key military leaders of Mexican independence, commanding the insurgent forces after Hidalgo's execution in 1811. He was himself captured and executed by the Spanish in 1815, but not before drafting a constitution and articulating a vision of Mexican independence that would eventually prevail. Morelia was renamed in his honour in 1828.
