Árbol de Manitas

The Árbol de Manitas — literally the "little hands tree" — is a specimen of the rare Mexican hand-flower tree planted in one of the courtyards of Toluca's historic centre. Its red flowers, each shaped like a small clenched hand with five fingers extended, appear in winter and spring and are one of the more peculiar sights of the central Mexican plateau.

The tree is not easy to find — ask at the Cosmovitral or Museo de Bellas Artes for current location and access; the trees do best in protected courtyards. The flower itself is the size of a small fist and very distinctive once you've seen one. Worth the small effort for travellers with botanical curiosity.

A story
The 'Little Hands Tree' (Chiranthodendron pentadactylon) is named for its small red flowers that look uncannily like a human hand with five outstretched fingers. The Aztecs used the flowers in medicine and as a status symbol; the species was almost wiped out in the wild and survives mainly in cultivated examples.
