Toluca Cathedral

The Cathedral of Saint Joseph of Nazareth, on the main plaza, is a comparatively young building by Mexican standards — construction began in 1867 and was not finished until 1978. The style is broadly neoclassical with later neo-Romanesque additions, and the long building period shows: the façade is restrained, the interior is florid.

Inside, the Sagrario chapel preserves elements of the older church it replaced, including 18th-century paintings and a much-venerated image of the Sacred Heart. The cathedral fronts the city's main square, the Plaza de los Mártires, and sits a few steps from the Portales.
