Mercado Juárez is Toluca's main covered market, a few blocks south of the Portales — a sprawling, two-storey building that draws thousands of shoppers from across the State of Mexico, especially on Friday, the traditional market day. The ground floor is mostly produce, meat, and fish; the upper floor is full of cooked-food stalls.
It is the natural place to try the city's signature dishes: chorizo verde (green chorizo, coloured with cilantro and chile), carnitas, and the tacos de plaza that vendors sell in dripping foil parcels. The market also has good stalls for the Mazahua and Otomí textiles produced in surrounding villages — embroidered blouses, woven sashes, and shawls.
