Museo de Bellas Artes

The Fine Arts Museum of Toluca occupies the former 18th-century convent of San Juan de Dios, a fine colonial building a short walk from the cathedral. The permanent collection is heavy on Mexican religious painting from the 17th and 18th centuries and on landscapes by José María Velasco, the great 19th-century painter who was born nearby in Temascalcingo.

The convent setting — patios, vaulted galleries, a chapel — is itself worth the entry. Allow an hour. The same complex also houses, when open, temporary exhibitions of contemporary Mexican art.
