Escambrón is the small crescent beach in Puerta de Tierra, between Old San Juan and Condado — the closest beach to the historic city and one of the safest for swimming. A natural rock breakwater shelters the bay, the offshore reef draws snorkellers, and the water is consistently clearer than at Condado.
The Third Millenium Park behind the beach has shaded picnic areas, washrooms, and parking. There is a lifeguard and snorkel-gear rental in season. Avenida Constitución runs above the beach, and you can walk here from Old San Juan in twenty minutes along the seawall promenade.
