Fort Charlotte

Crowning Morne Fortune, Fort Charlotte is a sprawling complex of stone barracks, magazines, ramparts, and gun emplacements built over more than a hundred years by French and British engineers. From up here you understand why the island was so fiercely contested — every ship approaching the harbour passes within easy range of the guns.

The fort is open and free to wander. Some of the buildings now house Sir Arthur Lewis Community College, but the ramparts, the old powder magazines, and the Inniskilling Monument on the highest point are all accessible. Bring water and a hat — there is no shade on the parade ground.

A story
It was here in 1796 that the British 27th (Inniskilling) Regiment, fighting alongside formerly enslaved Brigands and free Black soldiers, finally took the heights from the French. A small monument on the ridge marks the spot where the Union flag was raised.
