Walcott House

The small wooden house on Chaussee Road where Derek Walcott grew up has been restored and turned into a modest museum and cultural centre. The exhibits cover his life, his Methodist family in a Catholic island, his early paintings (he was a serious painter before he was a poet), and the poems and plays that won him the 1992 Nobel Prize in Literature.

The house also stages occasional readings and small concerts. Even if you have not read a line of Walcott, the cottage gives a feel for what middle-class life in colonial-era Castries looked like — small wooden rooms, a tiny garden, a porch facing the street.
