Tucked into the northern edge of the Savannah, Emperor Valley Zoo is a small but well-maintained zoo with a focus on Caribbean and South American wildlife — red howler monkeys, anacondas, caimans, and various parrots among them. It is a good place to spot creatures you might hope to see in the wild in Trinidad's forests. Modest admission fee; popular with local families on weekends.
Emperor Valley Zoo
Small Caribbean zoo with native wildlife by the Savannah
A story
The zoo's name comes from the Emperor butterfly (Morpho peleides), which used to be abundant in this area. The zoo opened in 1952 and houses many animals native to Trinidad, including the rare and endangered ocelot.
