Leafy colonial-era botanic gardens beside Queen's Park Savannah in Port of Spain

The Royal Botanic Gardens give Port of Spain one of its best slow walks: mature trees, palms, lawns and shaded paths beside the Queen's Park Savannah. The gardens date from the colonial period, but today they function as a public green refuge in a noisy, traffic-heavy capital.

Come in the morning or late afternoon, when the heat is gentler and locals are using the area for exercise and family strolls. The gardens combine easily with the Emperor Valley Zoo, the Magnificent Seven houses and a loop around the Savannah, making this one of the easiest parts of Port of Spain to explore on foot.
