Garden of Gethsemane

Address 602 W. Congress Street, Tucson, AZ

The Garden of Gethsemane is a small concrete sculpture garden on the west side of downtown — Felix Lucero's hand-cast tableau of the Last Supper, Crucifixion, and Nativity, dating from the 1940s and 50s. Lucero was homeless when he started, working with materials he found along the Santa Cruz River bed nearby.

Tucked under cottonwoods, it is a strange, sincere little space. Free, always open during daylight.

A story
The sculptor Felix Lucero made a bargain with God during the trenches of the First World War: spare his life and he would devote it to making religious sculpture. He survived, and after a vision in 1938 began sculpting the life-sized concrete Last Supper and Crucifixion figures that still stand here today.
