A long ridge trail across the Santa Rosa foothills behind Palm Desert, named for the actor William Boyd, who lived in the valley. The full traverse is roughly 8 miles between the Cap Homme trailhead in the south and the Bump and Grind area in the north, with about 1,400 feet of cumulative climbing.
The trail stays mostly on a contoured bench above the houses, with constant views over the Coachella Valley. There is no shade and no water — this is a winter or shoulder-season hike. Most people do it as a one-way with a car shuttle or as an out-and-back from either end.
