Arizona Cactus Garden

Hidden Victorian cactus garden behind the Stanford mausoleum

A small, slightly overgrown desert garden tucked behind the Stanford family mausoleum on the northern edge of campus. Jane Stanford had it laid out by Rudolph Ulrich in the 1880s as part of the family estate; it survived more or less by being forgotten when the original mansion was torn down.

Roughly 500 species of cactus and succulent still grow here, planted in concentric circles around a central palm. It's free, almost always empty, and a strange shock of Arizona desert in the middle of a leafy peninsula campus. Best visited in spring when the prickly pears flower.
