Papua New Guinea Sculpture Garden

Hidden grove of carved Papuan totems on Santa Teresa Street

A small, easily missed corner of campus that holds something genuinely surprising: dozens of carved wooden poles, masks, and figures created on site in 1994 by ten New Guinean master carvers. The pieces are arranged in a redwood grove, slowly weathering into the soil; the carvers chose this fate deliberately.

It's free, never crowded, and almost no Stanford tour stops here. Find it by walking south from the Cantor Arts Center past Roble Hall to the corner of Santa Teresa Street and Lomita Drive. The contrast with the manicured arcades a hundred yards away is its own reward.
