The 216-foot Gothic Revival campanile completed in 1921 is Yale's most recognisable landmark and one of the finest Gothic towers in America. Designed by James Gamble Rogers as part of the Memorial Quadrangle, it houses the Yale Memorial Carillon — 54 bells ranging from a few pounds to over seven tons. The carillon is played by students and visiting carillonneurs; on weekend afternoons, the bells ring across campus and into the surrounding streets. The tower and its courtyard are freely accessible.
