The Italian-American neighbourhood east of downtown is best known as the home of New Haven's famous pizza parlours — Frank Pepe, Sally's, and Modern are all within walking distance of the square. But Wooster Square itself is a lovely, tree-lined park with a statue of Christopher Columbus and Victorian rowhouses on three sides. In spring the cherry blossoms are spectacular. The neighbourhood's character as a working-class Italian enclave dates to the late 19th century, when immigrants settled here to work in the carriage and clock factories nearby.
