The ridge of dark traprock that runs north of the city offers the best hiking and views in the immediate New Haven area. The main summit, at 627 feet, looks south over Long Island Sound and east across the city. Judges Cave, a rock outcropping on the ridge, sheltered two of the regicide judges who signed Charles I's death warrant and fled to the New World when the monarchy was restored in 1660; a plaque marks the spot. The park has several miles of trails and is a short drive from downtown.
