Yale University Art Gallery

The oldest university art museum in the Western Hemisphere, the Yale University Art Gallery holds more than 250,000 objects spanning five millennia. The collection ranges from ancient Egyptian artifacts and Greek vases to medieval European paintings, Impressionist works, and a strong American art wing with Thomas Cole landscapes and John Trumbull's paintings of the American Revolution. The striking 1953 building by Louis Kahn — his first major commission — is itself worth studying. Admission is free and the gallery is open year-round except Mondays.

The Trumbull collection is housed in a gallery Trumbull himself designed in 1832, the first college art gallery in America.
