Switzer Covered Bridge

Restored nineteenth-century covered bridge in the countryside north of Frankfort.

Switzer Covered Bridge spans North Elkhorn Creek in rural Franklin County, a short drive north of Frankfort. The wooden bridge dates from the nineteenth century and has survived floods, collapse, and reconstruction, which gives it more story than the average roadside photo stop.

It is a small detour, not a half-day attraction, but it fits well with a slow drive through the Bluegrass countryside. The setting is quiet, the proportions are handsome, and the bridge gives visitors a tangible piece of Kentucky’s pre-automobile road network.
