Shreveport Municipal Memorial Auditorium

Built in 1929 in a striking Art Deco style, the Municipal Auditorium is one of the few buildings in Shreveport that everyone outside the city has heard of, even if they don't know they have. From 1948 to 1960 it was the home of the Louisiana Hayride, a Saturday-night country music radio show broadcast across the South — and the launching pad for Hank Williams in 1948 and Elvis Presley in 1954.

The building is now on Elvis Presley Boulevard (renamed for the occasion). Tours are sometimes available; check ahead. Even from the outside, the limestone facade, the eagles, and the sweep of the entrance steps are worth a look.

A story
On 16 October 1954, a 19-year-old Elvis Presley made his second public concert appearance on the stage here, on the Louisiana Hayride radio show. Unlike his disastrous Grand Ole Opry debut two weeks earlier, the Hayride crowd loved him — they signed him to a year-long contract on the spot. Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, and Willie Nelson all played the same stage.
