Shreveport Water Works Museum

A National Historic Landmark and a quietly extraordinary building — three vast brick pump halls full of cast-iron flywheels, gauges, and Worthington compound engines, all kept in working order by a small group of volunteers. They will fire up the steam plant for organised tours.

For anyone who likes industrial archaeology this is a must-see. For everyone else, the scale and stillness of the equipment is impressive on its own. Open weekends and by appointment.

A story
The McNeill Street Pumping Station is the only steam-powered municipal water plant left in the United States — and possibly the world — with all of its original equipment intact and operable. It pumped Shreveport's drinking water from 1887 until 1980.
