Pittsfield State Forest spreads west of the city into the Berkshire hills, with a useful mix of close-to-town trails and wilder upland corners. Berry Pond, high on Berry Mountain, is the best-known target, and the forest also links into longer ridge walks for travellers who want a proper day outside rather than a city park stroll.
The forest is practical as well as scenic: there are campsites, seasonal swimming and boating, mountain-biking routes, and winter use when the snow cooperates. It rounds out Pittsfield nicely, balancing the town's museums and theatres with a place where the Berkshires feel like mountains again.
