Jenks sits on the west bank of the Arkansas River in Tulsa County, just south of Tulsa itself. It is a small town of around 10,000 people that managed to reinvent itself: once dependent on oil, it now draws visitors for two very different reasons — a first-rate aquarium and a remarkable concentration of antique dealers.
The Oklahoma Aquarium, which opened in 2003, is the town's anchor attraction and one of the better aquariums in the southern United States. The Riverwalk Crossing development along the river has grown up around it, with restaurants, shops, and a pedestrian-friendly waterfront.
Jenks calls itself the "Antique Capital of Oklahoma," and the claim is not empty boasting. Dozens of antique shops line the main commercial strip, ranging from serious dealers to generalist junk emporiums, and dedicated collectors make the drive from Tulsa, Oklahoma City, and beyond. If you are passing through on a road trip along the Arkansas River, it is worth stopping for a few hours.
