Sturgeon Bay

Door County shipbuilding town where a working canal cuts across the peninsula.

Sturgeon Bay is the working end of Door County. It has the marinas, shipyards, bridges, and museums of a real Great Lakes port, not just the orchards and vacation villages that draw summer crowds farther up the peninsula.

The city sits where the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal cuts across Door County, linking Green Bay with Lake Michigan. That waterway gives the town its identity: steel bridges downtown, canal lighthouses near the lake, and the excellent Door County Maritime Museum on the waterfront.

Sturgeon Bay also works as a practical base for the lower Door Peninsula. Potawatomi State Park is right outside town, while Cave Point County Park and Whitefish Dunes State Park are close enough for a half-day loop. If you want Door County with a little more grit and history, start here.
