Bienal Internacional de Escultura

Major sculpture biennial; over 700 works fill the city's streets

Resistencia's Bienal Internacional de Escultura, run by the Fogón de los Arrieros, is the engine that keeps adding to the city's collection of street sculptures. Every two years, in July, ten leading sculptors are invited to spend a week working in public at the Parque 2 de Febrero, finishing one piece each. Visitors can watch the artists carve and weld; the finished works are donated to the city.

Even outside biennial weeks, the legacy is everywhere: more than 700 sculptures in stone, bronze, wood and steel line the streets and plazas of central Resistencia. Pick up a map at the Fogón or at any tourist office and walk a self-guided route.

A story
Each July of even-numbered years, ten international sculptors gather in Resistencia, work in public from sunrise to sunset for a week, and leave behind ten new pieces. The biennial has run since 1988 and donates every work to the city — which is why the streets just keep filling up.
