The Fogón de los Arrieros — "the fire of the muleteers" — is the cultural centre that turned Resistencia from a provincial Chaco capital into the City of Sculptures. Founded in 1943 by writers, painters and architects, it grew into a peripatetic salon and a bohemian club: a place where artists from across Argentina stopped, drank, exchanged work and gradually filled the rooms with art.
Today the Fogón is a working cultural space and an unofficial museum: a labyrinth of small rooms, a courtyard, a library, and walls hung with paintings by Lino Spilimbergo, Juan Carlos Castagnino and others, sculptures by Aurelio Macchi and a stained-glass ceiling. Free entry, casual hours, very Argentine.
