Out on the western edge of the city, Biocentro Güembé is part wildlife park, part resort, and part day-trip escape from the heat. The main draw is one of the largest butterfly enclosures in the world — a vast netted dome filled with tropical foliage and clouds of native species — alongside an orchid garden, an aviary, fish ponds, and walking trails through patches of dry forest.
There are several swimming pools fed by the natural setting, and most visitors make a day of it. It is touristy and not cheap by Bolivian standards, but for families or anyone wanting to see Amazonian flora and fauna without committing to a multi-day jungle trip, Güembé is a reasonable option. Take a taxi; it is about 20 minutes from the centre.
