La Rinconada

Eco-park and restaurant on the city's western edge, built around giant Amazon water lilies

An eco-park on the western edge of the city, with a restaurant attached and ponds of Victoria amazonica — the giant Amazon water lily, whose leaves grow to well over a metre across and turn up at the rim like a tray.

It is a short trip rather than an expedition: close enough to be an afternoon, landscaped rather than wild, and aimed as much at Cruceño families at the weekend as at visitors.

The lilies are at their best in the warmer months. Note that the park is often credited with a Guinness record for the size of its lilies; we have not been able to confirm that from any source that would know, so treat it as local pride rather than fact until somebody produces the certificate.
