Cafe Amsterdam, on Calle Bolívar a couple of blocks south of the plaza, is another long-running Dutch-Bolivian project in the city. The cafe-restaurant serves big breakfasts (Dutch pancakes a speciality), wraps, salads, a long vegetarian list, and a couple of decent Indonesian-leaning dishes — gado-gado, nasi goreng — that are otherwise hard to find in Bolivia. Profits support a children's NGO in the city.
The dining room is bright and informal, with secondhand-book exchanges, free Wi-Fi, and a noticeboard full of Spanish-school adverts and overland trip listings. Coffee is good, beer is cheap, and the music never gets in the way of conversation. A reliable choice for a relaxed lunch or a slow afternoon.
