Sucre's student population — the Universidad de San Francisco Xavier has been here since 1624 — keeps a steady supply of cafes, bookshops, and small bars open well past midnight. The area around the central plaza and along Calle Nicolás Ortiz is the densest cluster, with a mix of traveller-oriented places, locals' watering holes, and the odd spot for a serious coffee.
Bolivian wine from the Tarija valley is widely available and surprisingly good — try a Singani sour (the local grape spirit) if you want to drink like a Bolivian.
