Things to Do

Sucre's historic core is a compact grid of whitewashed colonial buildings, baroque churches, and arcaded plazas, all bound together by the strict municipal rule that the centre must stay white. UNESCO took notice in 1991 and the city has changed remarkably little since. Most of what you want to see is within easy walking distance of the central Plaza 25 de Mayo.

The highlights are the Casa de la Libertad, where Bolivian independence was declared in 1825, and the spectacular dinosaur footprints at Cal Orck'o on the city's edge — the largest single site of dinosaur tracks anywhere in the world. Add in a clutch of monasteries that double as superb museums of colonial art, the Indigenous Art Museum (ASUR), and the great viewpoint of La Recoleta, and you have several days of wandering. The light here is gorgeous; bring a camera.
