Sucre is one of the best places in Bolivia to buy traditional textiles. The Jalq'a and Tarabuco weavings sold through the ASUR foundation at the foot of the Recoleta hill are the genuine article — handwoven by named artists on backstrap looms in their home villages — and the prices return directly to the weavers. Cheaper aguayos and shawls are widely available around the Mercado Central and on Calle Calvo, but quality varies wildly.

For chocolate, head to Para Ti on Calle Audiencia — bars and pralines made from Alto Beni cacao, easily Bolivia's best chocolate. Silverwork from the Potosí region is sold from a row of small shops on Calle Bolívar; pieces use traditional designs but new metal, since old colonial silver is heavily restricted. For souvenirs at the cheapest, the small market in front of San Francisco church carries everything from llama-wool jumpers to charango miniatures.
