Getting Around

The historic centre of Sucre is small and very walkable — most sights are within ten minutes of the Plaza 25 de Mayo. The streets are flat by Bolivian standards, with only the climb up to La Recoleta and Cal Orck'o needing more effort. Wear comfortable shoes: the colonial cobblestones look romantic and feel less so by the end of the day.

For longer trips within the city, micros (small buses) and trufis (shared minibuses) cover the main routes for two or three bolivianos. They are numbered and useful for the bus station, Cal Orck'o, and the airport — though most tourists just take a taxi. Taxis are everywhere, agree the price in advance (typically 10–15 bolivianos for a ride across the centre), and use radio taxis at night. Uber does not operate in Sucre but a few local app-based services (such as Sucre Cabs) exist.

For day trips into the surrounding countryside — Tarabuco market, Maragua crater, Cal Orck'o — local agencies on Calle Nicolás Ortiz run small-group tours that include transport, a guide, and lunch.
