Mirador de la Recoleta

The classic sunset view over Sucre's white rooftops

The Mirador de la Recoleta is the broad stone terrace immediately in front of the Recoleta monastery, fenced by a low whitewashed parapet. From here you look out over the entire historic centre — a sea of white tiled roofs broken by the towers of the cathedral, La Merced and San Felipe Neri, with the Andean foothills rising behind. It is the single best view in Sucre, and around sunset it fills with locals, students, courting couples and tourists in roughly equal numbers.

A row of cafes and restaurants line one side of the mirador, and most have small terraces of their own. Cafe Mirador and Bar 7 Lunas are among the best for an evening glass of wine. The walk up Calle Bolívar from the centre takes about fifteen minutes, mostly uphill on cobblestones, and a taxi back into town at night costs only a few bolivianos if your legs are tired.
