Bocas de Ceniza

The river-mouth breakwaters where the Magdalena meets the Caribbean Sea.

Bocas de Ceniza is the dramatic mouth of the Magdalena River, where Colombia's great inland waterway reaches the Caribbean beside Barranquilla. Long breakwaters, industrial port scenery, river currents, and open sea create a landscape that feels both natural and engineered.

The excursion is less polished than a city museum or beach promenade, but it is one of the best ways to understand why Barranquilla grew as a port. Go for the scale of the river, the wind, and the sense of arrival at the edge of the continent rather than for conventional resort scenery.
